BOSTON — Six days after Cam Neely’s press conference comments and Jeremy Swayman’s agent’s response and accusations seemed to inflame negotiations between the Bruins and their free-agent goalie, the sides reached a deal. Swayman signed for 8 years at $8.25 per year on Sunday morning, two days before the season begins.

Both Jeremy Swayman and Don Sweeney both fielded questions from the media after the Bruins goalie signed a $66 million contract extension.

Less than a week after Bruins team president Cam Neely now famously said he’d have “64 million reasons” to be signing if he were Swayman, the goalie signed for an eight-year deal with an average annual value of $8.25 million on Sunday.

Swayman got what he wanted, at least enough of it, and the Bruins got what they needed, a young netminder who one day could be ranked among the NHL’s elite goalies.

For the past two-plus weeks, Jeremy Swayman made Boston University’s Agganis Arena his workplace. He had familiar faces as company. Former Boston Bruins assistant Jay Pandolfo is in charge at BU. Ex-Bruins skills coach Kim Brandvold is on Pandolfo’s staff.
